Director Asif Kapadia captures the last days of tennis star Roger Federer’s career in his sports documentary.
In the trailer for the documentary “Federer: Twelve Final Days,” which came out on Monday before its June 10 world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, Roger Federer says a tearful goodbye to his famous tennis career.
As Federer ends his 24-year career in professional tennis, he struggles to hold back his emotions. The documentary’s producers describe it as a home video not originally meant for public viewing. “I thought I had my emotions under control, but I can feel them coming up,” Federer says in the film as he prepares for his final match.
“Federer: Twelve Final Days” is directed by Asif Kapadia, known for documentaries like “Amy” about Amy Winehouse, “Senna” about race car driver Ayrton Senna, and a film about soccer legend Diego Maradona.
The trailer features comments from other tennis stars like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and John McEnroe. The documentary will stream exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories starting June 20.
In 2022, Federer announced his retirement from professional tennis at age 41, after winning 20 Grand Slam titles over his career. Kapadia and co-director Joe Sabia also filmed Federer during his final Laver Cup appearance with Team Europe.
After his last match, Federer said a tearful goodbye to his fellow players and fans. The trailer includes clips from Federer’s childhood and early tennis days, showing his early promise before turning professional.
“I used to watch the players with a sense of wonder, they were like giants to me. And I began to dream,” Federer says into a microphone, making his official retirement announcement.
“Federer: Twelve Final Days” is a Lafcadia Productions film, produced by Kapadia and George Chignell.
