Development

In October 2018, Jeff Nichols wanted to make a movie about bikers in the 1960s. He talked about it for five years, even though he didn’t have a script then. He mentioned the idea to Michael Shannon while working on a short film called Long Way Back Home. Michael Shannon told him, “You’ve been discussing that idea for so long. You’re never going to make that film.”

Later, in 2022, Jeff Nichols wrote the screenplay for the movie based on his original idea. New Regency agreed to produce the film in May 2022. The movie is named after a photography book in 1967 called “Danny Lyon.”

In August 2022, it was announced that Jeff Nichols would also direct the film. Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy were cast in the movie. Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Damon Herriman joined the cast later in the month. In September, Toby Wallace, Emory Cohen, Beau Knapp, Karl Glusman, and Happy Anderson joined the ensemble cast. Norman Reedus and Mike Faist were added to the cast the following month.

Filming

Filming started in Cincinnati, Ohio, in October 2022 and finished in December of the same year.

Release

The Bikeriders first showed at the 50th Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2023. Initially, it was supposed to appear in theatres on December 1, 2023, through 20th Century Studios. But, because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the release was canceled. This strike made it hard for the actors to promote the movie.

After this, on November 20, it was said that New Regency was trying to sell the film to other studios and streaming services. Two days later, Focus Features got the rights to release the movie globally, and Universal Pictures would distribute it internationally. On December 8, Focus announced that The Bikeriders would come to theatres in the United States on June 21, 2024.
