About Drive Away Dolls
Drive Away Dolls (also called Drive Away Dykes) is a funny movie from 2024. Ethan Coen directed it. He wrote the story with his wife, Tricia Cooke. They made the movie with Robert Graf, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner from Working Title Films. The main actors are Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon.
The story is about two friends who are lesbians. They go on a trip and run away from bad guys who want a unique bag they have. The movie came out in Australia on February 22, 2024, and in the United States the next day. Some critics liked it, but others didn’t.
Plot of Drive Away Dolls
In 1999, Santos was in a bar in Philadelphia holding a briefcase. He leaves quickly and is followed by the bartender, who kills him in an alley and takes off his head.
In another part of the city, Jamie and Sukie are a couple, but their relationship ends because Jamie cheated. When Sukie kicks Jamie out, Jamie asks her friend Marian to go on a trip to clear their minds. Marian suggests visiting her aunt in Tallahassee, and they get a car to Tallahassee through a mix-up.
At the same time, three criminals named Arliss, Flint, and Chief realize Jamie and Marian took their car by mistake, along with some illegal cargo. Marian wants to complete the task, but Jamie tries to have fun by taking detours. They discover Santos’ head and a briefcase in the trunk on their journey.
As they find this out, Arliss and Flint follow them. Jamie and Marian stay at a hotel, but the criminals catch up. Jamie convinces Marian to have a positive experience, and they have sex. The following day, the criminals take Santos’ head and the briefcase, revealing a collection of sex toys.
The criminals explain that these toys are modelled after influential people’s genitals. Jamie accidentally used one belonging to Senator Channel, a politician. After an argument, Flint shoots the others and runs away. Jamie and Marian decide to blackmail the senator.
Sukie, a police officer and Jamie’s ex, heads to Tallahassee after Jamie tips her off. Jamie and Marian meet Senator Channel at a bar, exchange the dildo for one million dollars, and Sukie arrives, shooting the senator.
The next day, Jamie, Marian, and Marian’s aunt plan to go to Massachusetts for a legal same-sex marriage. As they leave, a bellhop gives them a bag with two dildos modelled after Senator Channel’s penis.

Production of Drive Away Dolls
Development and casting
Ethan Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke, came up with the idea for a movie while talking to their friend Allison Anders on a Christmas vacation in San Francisco in the early 2000s. They officially announced the film in January 2007 as “Drive Away Dykes,” and Allison Anders was set to direct. The movie was inspired by romance films from the early 1970s. Stars like Selma Blair, Holly Hunter, Christina Applegate, and Chloë Sevigny were initially involved.
By April 2022, Ethan Coen took on the film’s director role, now described as an untitled “lesbian road trip project.” The movie was produced by Coen, Cooke, Robert Graf, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title. It marks Coen’s first solo directing project, aside from a documentary in 2022, and his first narrative film since 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”
Coen explained that he took a break from making movies in 2018 because it started feeling more like a job than fun after 30 years. The challenging production of their last two movies also played a role. The COVID-19 pandemic allowed Coen and Cooke to work on this new film.
In August 2022, Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan joined the cast, followed by Beanie Feldstein in September. In April 2023, the title was revealed as “Drive Away Dolls,” New additions to the cast included Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon.
Filming of Drive Away Dolls
They started making a movie in Pittsburgh in August 2022, and Ari Wegner took the pictures. They also filmed in Hopewell Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and Lawrence, Washington County, Pennsylvania, in October 2022.
Release of Drive Away Dolls
Drive Away Dolls came out in Australia on February 22, 2024. It was then released in the United States by Focus Features on the next day. The movie was supposed to come out on September 22, 2023, but there was a delay because of a strike in 2023. It’s planned to be released in the United Kingdom on March 15, 2024.
