About Borderlands
Borderlands is a new movie set in space. It’s funny, full of action, and based on a popular video game series. Eli Roth directed it and helped write it with Joe Crombie. The movie is made by many companies, including Media Capital Technologies and Gearbox Studios, and it’ll be out in August 2024.
The story is about a woman named Lillith, played by Cate Blanchett. She’s famous for being a troublemaker. She returns to her home planet, Pandora, and teams up with some other oddballs. They’re on a mission to find the daughter of the most powerful guy in the universe.
They’ve been working on making this movie since 2015, and it’s gone through some changes. Originally, Leigh Whannell was going to direct it, but Eli Roth took over. They started filming in 2021 in Budapest, Hungary. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to be careful. They finished most of it in June 2021 but had to do some extra scenes later.
The movie stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Edgar Ramírez. Thanks to Lionsgate, it will be released in August 2024 in the United States.

Premise of Borderlands
Lilith, a famous criminal with a secret past, returns to her home planet Pandora. She’s looking for the daughter of Atlas, the most powerful person in the universe. Lilith teams up with unexpected friends: Roland, a former soldier wanting to make up for his past; Tiny Tina, a wild young girl who loves blowing things up; Krieg, Tina’s strong but not-so-smart guardian; Tannis, a scientist who isn’t quite all there; and Claptrap, a sassy robot. Together, they fight aliens and bad guys to find and protect the missing girl, who might have incredible powers. They’re not just saving the universe but fighting for each other.

Production of Borderlands
Development
In May 2015, Leigh Whannell talked with Lionsgate Films about making a movie based on the video game series Borderlands. The movie was officially announced in August 2015. Ari and Avi Arad from Arad Productions would produce it, but they should have mentioned Whannell’s involvement. Aaron Berg was chosen to write a more mature story in April 2016. In June 2018, Oren Uziel took over writing the script from Berg.
In February 2020, Eli Roth was chosen to direct the movie, and Craig Mazin wrote the screenplay. Erik Feig joined as a producer through his company Picturestart. Cate Blanchett was picked to play Lilith in May 2020. Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black were confirmed to be part of the cast in January and February 2021.
Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, and Haley Bennett joined the movie the following month. Édgar Ramírez, Olivier Richters, and Janina Gavankar joined the cast in April, along with Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, Charles Babalola, Benjamin Byron Davis, Steven Boyer, Ryann Redmond, and Bobby Lee. By then, Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier had rewritten Mazin’s script, and Eli Roth rewrote it. In May, Penn Jillette announced that he would have a small role as a preacher in the movie.

Filming
They started making the movie on April 1, 2021, in Budapest, Hungary, while COVID-19 was still a problem. They finished filming on June 22. On June 4, 2021, they showed some pictures of the actors, but the pictures were black and white, and you couldn’t see the actors’ faces clearly, just their outlines.
Reshoots
In January 2023, they said the movie needed more filming. Tim Miller would direct these extra scenes because the principal director, Roth, was busy with other things until Thanksgiving 2023. Roth wouldn’t be there for the reshoots, but he still supported the movie and approved Miller. Zak Olkewicz wrote new parts of the script for Miller.
In June 2023, Mazin decided not to be part of the project anymore, and Joe Crombie took over. Mazin said Crombie wasn’t using his name as a fake. Other writers who contributed to the movie were Berg, Uziel, Taylor, Rettenmaier, Olkewicz, Chris Bremner, and Sam Levinson.
Music of Borderlands
In June 2021, they said Nathan Barr would make the music for the movie. He had worked with Roth before. But in October 2023, they told Steve Jablonsky would make the music instead of Barr.
