Production of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Development
A new movie in a series was first planned to come out in the mid-1990s. Eddie Murphy’s production company wanted to make it, but the project stopped. In 2006, a plan to restart the movie was announced by producer Jerry Bruckheimer. He later gave the job to Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
In September 2006, a script made from old ideas was shown to Eddie Murphy, who liked it. He wanted to make this new movie because he thought the third movie in the series was bad. He didn’t want to end the series on a bad note.
In May 2008, the director of Rush Hour, Brett Ratner, was chosen to direct the new movie. He promised it would be like the old movies with an “R” rating, not a softer “PG-13” rating.
There were many changes in the script and crew over the years. Sometimes they had a script ready, but then they would start over. It was hard to figure out how to continue the story. Eddie Murphy was interested in the project, but it was unsure if other actors from the previous movies would return.
In 2011, Eddie Murphy talked about making a TV show about Axel Foley’s son, but that didn’t happen. In 2013, they decided to try again with a fourth movie. Eddie Murphy agreed to reprise his role as Axel Foley, and Brett Ratner was back as the director.
The movie faced more delays and changes, including new directors and writers. The plot was about Axel Foley returning to Detroit after leaving Beverly Hills. The movie was set to start filming after Murphy finished another movie.
The project was moved to Netflix in 2019. The filming was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Different directors and writers worked on the movie, and it’s been a long process to get the movie made.
