About Backspot
Backspot is a drama movie from 2023. It’s directed by D. W. Waterson, who’s making their first full-length movie. The film stars Devery Jacobs, Kudakwashe Rutendo, and Evan Rachel Wood. Jacobs is also a producer, along with Waterson, under their Night is Y production company.
The movie was first shown in the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival Discovery program.

Synopsis
The story is about two cheerleaders, Riley and Amanda, who are trying to succeed in the world of professional cheerleading.

Production
This project is done by Page Boy Productions, Night is Y, and Prospero Pictures. Joanne Sarazen wrote it based on a story by Waterson. Elliot Page, Matthew Jordan Smith, John Davidson, and Katisha Shaw are executive producers. Alona Metzer, Waterson, Jacobs, and Martin Katz are producers. In December 2023, XYZ Films got the film’s U.S., Australia, and New Zealand distribution rights.
In cheerleading, a backspotter supports the flyer during stunts, so the project’s title refers to this role.

Casting
Jacobs made the movie and was named one of the main actors in October 2022. A new actor named Kudakwashe Rutendo was also named as the other leading actor in February 2023. Evan Rachel Wood was announced to have joined the making of the movie in March 2023.

Filming
Filming started in Toronto in February 2023. Collider mentioned that filming finished in March 2023.
Release
Backspot will come out in the United States on May 31, 2024.
