Back to Black is a new movie about the life of Amy Winehouse, a famous singer from Britain. Marisa Abela plays the role of Amy. Development
After Winehouse passed away in 2011, people tried to make a movie about her life, but none of the plans worked out. In 2015, there was a project with Noomi Rapace as the star, but it didn’t happen. In October 2018, it was announced that Winehouse’s family agreed to make a movie about her. In July 2022, Deadline Hollywood said StudioCanal was making a movie called “Back to Black” about Winehouse’s life and music. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed it, and Matt Greenhalgh wrote the script. The movie includes many of Winehouse’s songs. It is a collaboration between American and British companies like StudioCanal, Focus Features, and Monumental Pictures.
Casting
In January 2023, it was said that Marisa Abela would act as Amy Winehouse. Later that month, Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, and Lesley Manville joined the cast. Jack O’Connell will play Blake Fielder-Civil, Amy’s husband, from 2007 to 2009. Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville will be Amy’s dad and grandma, Mitch Winehouse and Cynthia Winehouse. Juliet Cowan will act as Amy’s mom, Janis Winehouse-Collins.
Filming
They filmed the main parts of the movie in London from January to April 2023. Polly Morgan was the person in charge of the camera. They recorded scenes at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, outside Amy Winehouse’s first apartment in Camden Town, and at Primrose Hill. In February, they filmed inside the Metropolis Studios in Chiswick. From March 13 to March 18, they went to Fitzrovia to film scenes at Fitzroy Square. The following week, Abela and O’Connell filmed scenes at the London Zoo.
Release
The movie “Back to Black” will be shown in different countries by different companies. In the United States, it will be shown by Focus Features. But in other countries like the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Benelux, Scandinavia, and Poland, it will be shown by its parent company, Universal Pictures. The movie will appear first in the United Kingdom and Poland on April 12, 2024. After that, it will be released in Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands on April 18. Finally, it will be shown in France and New Zealand next week. In the United States, the movie is set to come out on May 10, 2024, according to Focus Features.
