About Asphalt City
Asphalt City is a movie that came out in 2023. It’s a thriller drama directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire and written by Ryan King and Ben Mac Brown. They got the idea from a book called Black Flies, written by Shannon Burke in 2008. The main actors in the movie are Sean Penn, Tye Sheridan, Katherine Waterston, Michael Pitt, Mike Tyson, and Raquel Nave.
The movie was first shown at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, with the name Black Flies. It will be in theaters for everyone to watch on March 29, 2024, thanks to Vertical Entertainment and Roadside Attractions.

Production of Asphalt City
In December 2018, a script called Black Flies, written by Ryan King and based on a book by Shannon Burke, got attention on the Black List. The Black List is a yearly list of the best scripts that haven’t been made into movies yet.
In February 2019, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire agreed to direct the movie, and Mel Gibson and Tye Sheridan were close to signing on as actors. But by February 2021, Sean Penn took over one of the main roles from Gibson, and Open Road Films got the rights to distribute the movie in the United States. Other actors like Katherine Waterston, Michael Pitt, Mike Tyson, and Raquel Nave joined the cast in the following months. They started filming in May 2022 in New York City with David Ungaro as the cinematographer.
Release
The movie Black Flies first showed to the world at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023. It was in a competition for a prize called the Palme d’Or. The plan was for the movie to come out in the United States through Open Road Films. But, in January 2024, Vertical Entertainment and Roadside Attractions got the rights to distribute the movie. They decided to release it on March 29, 2024, with a new name—Asphalt City.
