Raman Hui Shing-Ngai, born on July 4, 1963, is a person from Hong Kong who is really good at making cartoons and movies. He is famous for directing Monster Hunt and Monster Hunt 2.
When Raman was a kid, he lived with his mom and two siblings. He loved to draw from a very young age. He went to Hong Kong Polytechnic University and graduated in 1984 in graphic design.
After finishing university, he worked in Hong Kong as a cel animator. Later, in 1989, he moved to Canada to learn more about computer animation. He spent some time in Toronto making animated stuff for TV commercials. Then, in 1989, he started working at Pacific Data Images, which later became part of DreamWorks Animation. He worked on many commercials and short films. Raman directed two short films called Sleepy Guy (1995) and Fat Cat on a Diet (2000). He also worked on the movies Antz, Shrek, and Shrek 2. In 2007, he co-directed Shrek the Third and directed some short films like Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five, Scared Shrekless, and Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos.
Apart from making movies, Raman also drew pictures for children’s story books with Kiehl’s to raise money for Hong Kong organizations. His first book, Brownie and Sesame, came out in 2004, followed by Piccolo in 2005, and Grandma Long Ears in 2006.
Because of his work on Shrek, Forbes mentioned Raman in 2010 as one of the important Chinese-Americans in the business world.
Raman calls himself a “Hong Konger living in America,” dealing with both Western and Chinese cultures. Even though he faced some challenges when he moved to the United States, he likes working there because people give him enough time to do his job well, and that’s where he learned all his skills.
