Matthew Avery Modine is an actor from America. He became famous for playing U.S. Marine Private/Sergeant J.T. “Joker” Davis in Stanley Kubrick’s movie called Full Metal Jacket, which came out in 1987. Some other movies he’s been in are Birdy, Vision Quest, Married to the Mob, Pacific Heights, Short Cuts, Cutthroat Island, The Dark Knight Rises, and Oppenheimer. He’s also been on TV, acting as Dr. Don Francis in And the Band Played On, Sullivan Groff in Weeds, Ivan Turing in Proof, and Dr. Martin Brenner in Stranger Things.
Modine got nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award for his roles in And the Band Played On and What the Deaf Man Heard. He also got a special Golden Globe for his work in Short Cuts. He was up for a Primetime Emmy Award for his role in And the Band Played On.
He was born on March 22, 1959, in Loma Linda, California. He’s the youngest of seven kids. His parents were Dolores and Mark Alexander Modine. His mom worked as a bookkeeper, and his dad managed drive-in theaters. Modine lived in Utah for some years before going back to California and finishing high school there.
Modine started his acting career with a role in Baby It’s You in 1983. He’s been in a lot of movies since then. He’s also appeared in TV shows like The West Wing and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Modine has a wife named Caridad Rivera, and they got married in 1980. They have two kids together.
He’s also active in environmental causes and loves riding bicycles. He even leads an organization called “Bicycle for a Day.”
In 2019 and 2021, he ran for president in a union election for SAG-AFTRA, but he didn’t win.
