Kim Petras is a singer and songwriter from Germany who now lives in Los Angeles, California. She started making music when she was a teenager and released many songs on her own from 2016 to 2020. In 2021, she signed with Amigo and Republic Records.
Kim has released a bunch of singles, like “I Don’t Want It at All,” “Heart to Break,” and “1, 2, 3 Dayz Up.” She calls this set of songs “Era 1.” Some of these songs even made it onto the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart. In 2019, she released two full albums, Clarity and Turn Off the Light.
In 2021, Kim signed with Republic Records and released an EP called Slut Pop. Her song “Unholy” with Sam Smith became a big hit in 2022, reaching number one on charts in the UK and the United States. This made Kim the first openly transgender solo artist to top the charts in the U.S.
Kim Petras was born in Cologne, Germany. Her mom is a choreographer, her dad is an architect, and her older sister is also a singer. Kim wrote her first song in second grade! When she was 13, she talked about her gender transition on a TV show. She learned English by watching Britney Spears videos.
Kim has been making music since 2008. She released singles like “Fade Away” and “Boomerang” in the beginning. In 2017, she hit it big with her single “I Don’t Want It at All.” After that, she kept releasing catchy pop songs and even went on tour.
In 2021, Kim signed with a big record company, Republic Records, and released the single “Future Starts Now.” She performed at the MTV Video Music Awards and the MTV Europe Music Awards, making history as the first openly transgender artist to perform at these events. She also performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, becoming the first openly transgender performer there too.
Kim Petras keeps making music, and she surprised everyone with an EP called Slut Pop in 2022. Later that year, she teamed up with Sam Smith for the song “Unholy,” which became a massive hit. Kim and Sam even won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
In 2023, Kim released the single “Alone” with Nicki Minaj and announced her debut studio album, Feed the Beast. She continues to make music and tour around the world.
